Note the trench at the left where perforated corrugated metal pipe is being installed for underground drainage purposes.

      • Description: November 9, 1945. Howard Street Pavement and Sidewalk Project. This view was taken at the intersection of Hayward Street looking westerly. Note the new concrete sidewalk on north side and new integral concrete curbs and gutters on both sides of pavement. The Hot Plant Mix Asphalt Wearing Surface was just bieng completed when this picture was taken. Grading between curb and sidewalk on North Side and in back of curb on South side was completed the following day after picture was taken. The 2 inch asphalt wearing surface was placed on a 3 inch penetration macadam with an 8 inch telford stone base. Drainage tile was laid the entire length of the street on the rear of the curbs on either side and in the center line of the street. All tile was drained with catch basins and manholes.

        • Description: May 25, 1942. Hayward Street Improvements Project. This view is taken from the intersection of Howard St. looking northerly to the intersection of Marble Ave. The excavation of the old pavement was partially done last winter and completed this month after which the sand cushion and telford stone base was constructed and the penetration course of chestnut stone has been spread over the telford base and roughly graded ready for rolling with the 15 ton steam roller. Note the condition of the old curbs which will be reset or replaced as the condition warrants.

Note the old trolley (cable) car tracks and overhead wires which have been abandoned, also note the irregular and worn condition of the old brick pavement. Strong Theatre, Post Office and mansard roofed building (167-169 Main) that once was a place of worship for the First Baptist Church on the left. Retail businesses on the right. Automobiles parked on both sides of the street. In the far right foreground a man leans against a street light pole.

                  • Description: May, 5, 1943. Rail Removal Project, Burlington, Vermont. This view shows 3 stages of the project on Main St. in front of the U.S. Post Office (on the left). In the foreground can be seen the concrete base which is just being poured in the trench on the right and the sub-base ready to receive the concrete in the trench on the left, also 6 inch header at point of switch. The trench on the right beyond the header is ready for the rail to be removed. The rail is being removed in the background from the trench on the left by aid of the "A" frame and derrick. 2 inch hot asphalt plant mix will be constructed on top of the concrete base to finish the pavement. Also on the left center is the mansard roofed building that once was a place of worship for the First Baptist Church. Across the street from that building is seen a corner of the City Hall. On the right are businesses including the Federal Savings and Loan.

                      • Description: May, 5, 1943. Rail Removal Project. Burlington, Vermont by the city street dept. This view shows the construction of the "A" Frame and the method of attaching the frame to the end of the 26 foot boom of the Universal Truck Crane. The chain falls attached to the end of the frame and the boom were used for raising the frame when moving or when rough or uneven surface would not allow the frame to slide over the pavement without digging into the surface. Behind to the left is 174 Main, location of the Burlington Mutual Fire Insurance Company and on the right is 184 Main location of Gove, the Florist.
