    • Description: January 12, 1942. Hayward Street Improvements: This view shows Hayward Street looking north from the intersection of Catherine Street. The old curbs and gutters have been removed and broken up for use as telford base. A 6" drain tile has been installed on either side of the street three fee below grade of top of curb and one foot back of curb. The drainage trench has been backfilled with crushed stone to within one foot of the surface. Tar paper has been spread over the crushed stone before backfilling the remainder of the trench to prevent dirt from filtering down into the stone drain. A 6" sand cushion has been placed over the clay sub-base and an 8" telford stone base has been placed by hand on the sand cushion as seen in the foreground. On this telford course has been spread approximately two inches of 1 1/2" stone which will later be given a penetration of asphalt binder. The power shovel and crane with drop hammer can be seen in the distance excavating the old pavement and sub-base at the intersection of Howard Street. Two new catch basins were constructed at the intersection of Catherine Street to replace the two old ones. More information can be found at the UVM web site Historic Burlington Project, Burlington, Vermont (South of Pearl Street photographs from 1930s 1940s).

PINE STREET CENTRAL PLANT STOREHOUSE NO.1 This view of the storehouse No. 1 shows it as it appeared in December 1942 after the rough boarding and roof work had been nearly completed. This storehouse was constructed mainly for storing sand and salt for winter use in sanding the streets and sidewalks, also for storing the snow fence and sand boxes during the summer. In addition to this, however, the ground floor of the original section of the old Robinson-Edwards Lumber shed shown at the right end of the storehouse is used for storing machinery and equipment while the south end shown at the left side of the picture is used for storing small tools and equipment. Note the 60 foot timber truss supported by one center pier which was constructed between the two halves of the original lumber shed making a total length of 120 feet and a total width of 40 feet. Note the two salt bins at either side of the sand storage space, also the Elevating Conveyor used in loading sand.
