<l>New Year's Day.</l>
<l>JANUARY</l>
<l>1</l>
<l>SUNDAY</l>
<l>Slept badly and woke with a sore throat</l>
<l>which is an unusual affliction for me.</l>
<l>We were all late getting up so Isabel</l>
<l>and I were the only ones to go to church.</l>
<l>Dr. Ladd had a very fine sermon and</l>
<l>the Communion Service was lovely. It</l>
<l>is raw and chilly today. This afternoon</l>
<l>I started out on a round of calls, first</l>
<l>going to the Carrigan's but they were</l>
<l>out so I went over to see Grace Burwash</l>
<l>and Genette Davis. Miss D. was not in</l>
<l>but I had a nice chat with Miss Burwash.</l>
<l>From there I went over to see Harold and</l>
<l>Lucy French and from there down to the</l>
<l>New Year's reception at Col. Spalding's</l>
<l>which was very nice and quite gay. Mrs.</l>
<l>S. lovely and an air of geniality about.</l>
<l>I planned to stop at Margaret Loudon's but</l>
<l>saw no light so I went on to stop for a bit</l>
<l>at the Shepardson's and by that time</l>
<l>it was seven o 'clock so I came home to</l>
<l>Christmas letters, bills and accounts.</l>
<l>I am sorry the holiday is over as I</l>
<l>don't feel very ambitious for more work.</l>

<l>SATURDAY</l>
<l>Snowing early today but before noon was clear</l>
<l>and lovely. Had busy hour in the office and</l>
<l>then tore over to Southwick to fix tables, back</l>
<l>downtown for more flowers, candles, etc. and</l>
<l>to interview a prospective councilor for</l>
<l>Y.WCA. Back to Southwick to find that</l>
<l>our friends had sent beautiful flowers</l>
<l>for our party. Pres. & Mrs. Bailey, Dean & Mrs.</l>
<l>Swift, House Directors, girls in the office,</l>
<l>other girls - Mrs. Adams. The party went off</l>
<l>beautifully and about 225 were</l>
<l>there during the P.M. Girls looked lovely,</l>
<l>place lovely, food good and everyone</l>
<l>seemed to enjoy themselves. My feet</l>
<l>hurt so that I could barely walk out to</l>
<l>the car to go home.</l>

<l>from an operation. Jim & Jean</l>

<l>Anne served us coffee and</l>

<l>Woke up with sore stomach muscles and</l>

<l>apparently none the worse for my</l>

<l>my breakfast to me in bed and</l>
<l>I ate leisurely while she chattered.</l>
<l>The general disorder in which she</l>
<l>lives would drive me insane</l>
<l>and I do not see how she can</l>
<l>discipline nurses when her</l>
<l>surroundings are always getting</l>
<l>the best of it. We decided that I</l>
<l>should take the 10:30 bus to</l>

<l>I reached Springfield I found that</l>

<l>from Rutland. I did up the work</l>

<l>very well but the roads, altho not</l>

<l>this P.M. and stopped in to Dr.</l>
<l>Taggart's office to see if the X-Ray</l>

<l>trouble but the aid did not so</l>
<l>we must look elsewhere for</l>

<l>go in again next Monday to</l>
<l>have one cavity filled.</l>

<l>NOVEMBER</l>
<l>30</l>
<l>THURSDAY</l>
<l>A beautiful day and much milder</l>
<l>than I had expected. I spent most</l>
<l>of the morning working on the</l>
<l>State Presidents letter for Delta Kappa</l>
<l>Gamma which is overdue. How</l>
<l>I do dislike all that nonsense</l>
<l>and how I wish I had never</l>
<l>joined the wretched thing. We have</l>
<l>had no word from John or Betty</l>
<l>since early last week and</l>
<l>Thanksgiving Day seems a bit</l>
<l>queer here by ourselves with</l>
<l>so much uncertainty about</l>
<l>so many things. My knee gave</l>
<l>a few twinges this A.M. but</l>
<l>has been better this A.M. I wish I</l>
<l>knew what causes it - that</l>
<l>would be a relief - I feel about 50 %</l>
<l>efficient most of the time. Went</l>
<l>as far as Shelburne in the car this</l>
<l>P.M. and mother enjoyed it. The</l>
<l>terribly shocking news of Russia's</l>
<l>invasion of Finland came</l>
<l>tonight. It is too awful to think of</l>
<l>that beautiful city in ruins and</l>
<l>people slain</l>

<l>SATURDAY</l>
<l>Very, very weary indeed and do</l>
<l>not feel at all ready for Christmas</l>
<l>Snowed today. I went downtown</l>
<l>and found it very slippery. Elspeth</l>
<l>went home with the Paterson's</l>
<l>wedged in like sardines in a can</l>
<l>but she was able to take the</l>
<l>big boxy gifts for Jean's household</l>
<l>which was a relief. Mother and</l>
<l>I took the outside wrappings</l>
<l>off our things and will open some</l>

<l>Got up fairly early this morning so</l>

<l>was pungent with balsam, There were a</l>

<l>called them to say "Merry Xmas".</l>
<l>John answered and it surely was</l>
<l>good to hear his voice. They had</l>
<l>received our package Sat. and</l>
<l>the two boxes of cookies were all</l>
<l>gone even then. They both sounded</l>
<l>cheerful and it made our Christmas</l>
<l>much happier to have talked with</l>
<l>them. Up early Christmas A.M. to</l>
<l>get breakfast and make things</l>
<l>neat before finishing the pleasant</l>
<l>task of opening our many lovely</l>
<l>gifts. Mother feels fine and we have</l>
<l>had such a happy day together</l>
<l>with pleasant things to do and</l>
<l>to think about. The Mortar Board</l>
<l>girls sent me beautiful pink</l>
<l>roses this morning and Helen Nichols</l>
<l>also sent holly & the Butterfield's a</l>

<l>TUESDAY</l>
<l>a lame back and a sore foot which keep</l>
<l>me from enjoying life as I would</l>
<l>like to. Today I was busy from</l>
<l>8:00 to 3:30 getting things put</l>
<l>away, the place swept and dusted</l>
<l>and something to eat. By that</l>
<l>time I was terribly tired. We had</l>
<l>hundreds of Christmas cards</l>
<l>which gave me much pleasure.</l>
<l>While we were eating dinner -</l>
<l>Charlotte was here - Elspeth</l>
<l>came in on the bus and I</l>
<l>was glad indeed to see her.</l>
<l>After dinner James telephoned</l>
<l>from downtown and soon came</l>
<l>up. I was awfully glad to see</l>
<l>him but I was so tired and</l>
<l>sort of all in generally that I could</l>
<l>scarcely hold onto myself thro'</l>
<l>the evening until we could get</l>
<l>his bed made on the davenport</l>
<l>and get things quiet for the night.</l>

<l>DECEMBER</l>
<l>27</l>
<l>WEDNESDAY</l>
<l>James had a cold drive up yesterday</l>
<l>and it was still colder today,</l>
<l>down to 12° below zero in some</l>
<l>parts of the city. I still felt rotten</l>
<l>when I got up this A.M. but not</l>
<l>as all gone as I was last night.</l>
<l>James could not start his car</l>
<l>this morning so we used mine</l>
<l>to get downtown - and was it cold</l>
<l>on Church St. Ugh! Later, as we</l>
<l>were driving over to Southwick to look</l>
<l>at the lovely mountains my car</l>
<l>began to steam so we had to stop</l>
<l>and let it cool off. Later I took it</l>
<l>down and had more Anti-Freeze</l>
<l>put into it and James had the</l>
<l>wrecker come up and get his and</l>
<l>take it down to warm storage where</l>
<l>he left it. He made some calls today</l>
<l>and I went to the office to get the</l>
<l>mail etc. I'm just as dead tonight</l>
<l>as last night and was glad</l>
<l>when everyone turned in and</l>

<l>and James took me down to</l>
<l>the Park for lunch. We planned</l>
<l>to go to the movies afterwards but</l>
<l>decided against it as the offerings</l>
<l>seemed to be only fair. He had</l>
<l>intended to leave for East Hill</l>
<l>early but all at once we decided</l>
<l>to drive out to Milton to see</l>
<l>Ina and Susan which we did</l>
<l>much to our mutual pleasure.</l>
<l>It was beautiful coming back</l>
<l>just at sunset but, o, so cold.</l>
<l>James had a cup of hot coffee</l>
<l>and a sandwich and then</l>
<l>started off for Crafstbury. It was</l>
<l>so nice having him here. He always</l>
<l>cheers me up and he left me</l>

<l>Finally got the Christmas things</l>
<l>put away this morning, or</l>

<l>tired but not so much</l>

<l>if I go down there.</l>
<l>This P.M. I got dressed</l>
<l>up as well as may be, and</l>
<l>went to Betsey Perry's for a</l>
<l>tea in honor of her Mother.</l>
<l>Nice enough but I was bored.</l>
<l>Brot Mrs. Staltz home so could</l>
<l>escape early. Everything was very</l>
<l>dainty and attractive but it was</l>
<l>just another tea and I'm</l>

<l>did up Aunt Martha's photograph</l>
<l>and mailed it. By the time I had</l>
<l>done that and the marketing I</l>
<l>was again worn out. Got "Escape"</l>
<l>at the bookshop and after dinner</l>
<l>put on a housecoat and settled</l>
<l>down on the couch to read but</l>
<l>was not comfortable so swapped</l>
<l>to the bed. Read late. Had a letter</l>
<l>from John this A.M. which was</l>
