Afterwards bought plain blue wool coat at Franklin Simon's, also a very inexpensive printed coat. Called Betty & arranged to go down at 5:45. My feet hurt frightfully by time I got over to Times Sq. & down to 200 W 15th only to find a note saying she was delayed at office. Called her but got an uneasy feeling that she was upset about something. Said John was to see Dr. at 6:00. Went back to Roosevelt & waited until 7:15 when I caught bus to LaGuardia field & plane home. Very comfortable trip. After lunch went to market & when I returned found that trustees were on way to B. so met at 3:30 at Mrs. Carpenter's. Lasted until 7:00 P.M. left me completely fagged so finished errands & came home to a late dinner knit on my sock & went to bed fairly early. Very lame & feet hurt frightfully. It rained all morning but was clear for a few minutes about 4:00 so they could be married out on the lawn. Very nice affair JUNE 28 SATURDAY SUNDAY 29 JUNE Lovely day Mother went to church as it was Communion and she was eager to go. She stood it very well and then to Jean's for dinner with Mrs. Chellis. JUNE 30 MONDAY Took Meta [Metta] Chellis to St. Johnsbury to meet bus there. Lovely drive. Stopped on way back to call on Mary Hagen. Worked in garden in P.M. JULY 2 WEDNESDAY Much cooler today. Drove to Barre to see Dr. Kingston & get Mother's glasses. On way picked up an iron which ruined my tire & tube so had to get a new one for $12.85 - Sad. Ouida went with us & we called on Dora after lunh [lunch] - Bunny's treat, at restaurant. Home about 4:00 - very weary. Had to make layer cake & salad for church - Missionary society picnic at Shadow Lake but could not go so sent it by Mrs. Killough. JULY 3 THURSDAY Up early to make cake & salad for strawberry supper at the church. Went over to Library to the Birthday Party which was very slow - I was bored but stayed until eats were ready then escaped - weary. JULY 4 FRIDAY Nice day but cooler. Worked hard all A.M. in garden & then went down to Aunt Kate's for lunch. Mother not feeling very well & tho't she could not go but I encouraged her so she finally got ready, went & had a good time & very nice lunch. Came home early and worked in the garden weeded rock garden, clipped etc. Nettie was away so I prepared supper and spent quiet evening. JULY 5 SATURDAY Up early and off to B. to see if all was going well for S.S. Spent A.M. in office, P.M. with Mrs. Allen, inspected all the dormitories. Not using Roberts House. Left for home about 8:00 via Morrisville. Rodads [Roads] very rough from M. home also dusty. Mother in bed when I arrived SUNDAY 6 JULY Lovely day but warm. Did not go to church but did go to a funeral - Mrs. Tate at church for which I fixed flowers. Washed car. watered tomatoes, & waited until nearly 8:00 for Nettie to return. Back to B. over Eden & delayed by lady with flat tire JULY 7 MONDAY Summer school opened today and all went well thanks to the planning of Constans. It was not so hot as usual, Helen took over the serving of punch and we were lucky in being able to come out right on the accounts to a penny so we got thro' at 5:30. C.H. took me to supper at the Park - steak, etc and we went to her house afterward for a smoke and cool rest on her porch. Home to do accounts and clean up my desk. JULY 29 TUESDAY Mother's birthday. She had party at Aunt Kate's and when I called up tonight reported that she had a grand time and enjoyed it thoroughly. I had to assist at a panel discussion which was part of the Guidance Conference Program. I was too busy to go to the afternoon sessions which were good I hear. AUGUST 7 THURSDAY Have just learned that there is a special faculty meeting tomorrow at 4:00 so I wont get away early AUGUST 8 FRIDAY Very busy day, as usual but managed to get my work pretty well caught up so that I got away about 5:30. Went via Richmond to get ham and Isabel and Martha Dill, who have been here nearly all week, returned home with me. Kate arrived just as I did and I was glad to see her. I got some supper for myself and went over to Jean's for a half hour to see Dick & Mary Scandrett. Dick is as interesting and also as conceited as ever. We went to bed early because we must get an early start for Maine tomorrow. Have just learned that there is a Faculty meeting at AUGUST 9 SATURDAY Up very early and off to Saco. Maine via St. J. Lancaster and No. Conway. a very lovely day to drive. Arrived about noon and found the place finally - not much impressed: had wretched lunch and our room is small and hot. Conference all P.M. then good dinner at nearby hotel, and conference until 10:00 P.M. To bed but too humid to sleep so was up for breakfast early after which packed, then conferred more until 11:30 when we got off for home. Had front of grill on radiator damaged & one bumper in collision in Saco. S SUNDAY 10 AUGUST Stopped at York Beach and tho't to go via Concord to see Aunt Martha but the traffic discouraged me so we turned north at Portsmouth and got home by 8:30, long before mother expected us. Very tired. Conference was very helpful. AUGUST 11 MONDAY Up very early and came back via Eden making very good time. Have felt a bit old all day so did not go to the play tonight. Busy all day and wrote to James this evening. AUGUST 15 FRIDAY Summer School closed today. It has gone fast, this summer, I don't know whether I ought to go to Minneapolis or not: will see how things are at home first. Am really rather too weary to make the effort and there are so many things to do at home that I know I should get there as soon as possible. AUGUST 16 SATURDAY Very busy morning and had last details of NAM's all in hand, thanks to Constans' good planning. Frances Hoag is coming in to help us for a while. Home, to get lunch, clean up the apt. and finally off about 3:00 P.M. via Eden. Rained torrents all the way. Mother so surprised to see me as she thought I would not get home this week. Nettie at fair & Mrs. McLaren there with Mother. Did not go to the Goddard Trustees meeting. SUNDAY 17 AUGUST Mrs. McLaren and I went to church & heard Ellen Armour Truxell [Troxel] tell about China. Very good. Got the dinner and in P.M. called on Aunt Kate. Nettie was off but supposed to come back at 8:00. Did not but went to church to hear Mrs. Baker an English woman - very good August 18 Monday Got up early and was off for Burlington by 7:30. Beautiful day and as I went over Eden Mt. the sun was bright on the hills which stood out like cameos. Got here a bit after 9:00 but delayed on arriving because the milk bottle spilled all over the rug of the car so I had to wash it in the bath tub. N A M's here in full force, 168 of them. Tonight Constans and I went to Southwick to see, "Ten Nights in a Bar room" burlesqued. I did not enjoy it Very weary and also cold so took lemonade and asprin before going to bed. AUGUST 19 TUESDAY Rainy, chill day. Worked hard on supplement to Freshman Handbook and went to lunch with Constans as guests of NAM's at Hotel Vermont. Very good and we enjoyed it. Tonight had waffles and sausages with Nina and Robert Merrill and a good visit which lasted late. Glad I decided not to go to Minneapolis for I find I am really very tired indeed. Cleaned the kitchen shelves and started getting things together to go home Thursday. AUGUST 22 FRIDAY Very busy day. Nettie not feeling well has bad cold and a cough which persists. Also I think something is troubling her other than her physical health. Probably her family. Late today I recieved a wire from Donald Wright saying that Aunt Harriet had died early this morning. I do not yet know the details. Mother had already gone to bed and as I have to be away part of the day tomorrow I did not tell her because I know she would not sleep tonight and would grieve and be lonely while I am away. Sweet Harriet would have been ninety years old her next birthday. She has been failing all summer and mother has not heard from her since June altho' she has written every week to her. AUGUST 23 SATURDAY A wire from Don This morning I was up and got off early for Canaan but as I had forgotten just which route to take I lost some time but arrived at the church just as the bride was about to enter. Very pretty wedding after which we went back to the house for refresments and saw the bride and groom off. I drove back down the river to Lunemburg [Lunenburg] and home via St. J. SUNDAY 24 AUGUST This morning I told Mother about Aunt Harriet. She took it bravely but it saddens us all for she is the last one of Mother's family and her death brings Mother to feel that she is not to be here long herself She is frailer than I have ever seen her AUGUST 27 WEDNESDAY This was the day for the Merit System exams and I was up and away before eight o'clock so that I would be at the State House at 9:00 A.M. Very busy day but it was an interesting experience and I really enjoyed it. AUGUST 29 FRIDAY Mrs Hanson went to Greensboro to see the Doctor who advised her to give up work and rest. She says she cannot stay longer than this week which leaves me in a jam as I must go back to work by Sept. 12 and John is coming over Labor Day. I got Lois to come down today to can the corn and we also cleaned thoroughly upstairs. Nettie has not been like herself this sumer at all but I am quite sure that it is not all that she is not well She seems very different and has not been like herself all summer. She came here twelve years ago and now it will seem strange to have someone else, even if I can find someone. I shall miss her for in spite of her short- comings she was good in AUGUST 30 SATURDAY many ways. I am tired and a bit discouraged. Busy morning getting Mother up and out on the porch. Nettie cleaned up her room and left bag and baggage in the late P.M. I drove up to see if the woman on The Barclay place would come but she is not well either so cannot do so. I will try Elizabeth Harper tomorrow or Monday. Meanwhile the house seems strangely quiet. It feels like the end of an epoch, so to speak, as if one chapter was closed and the place here would neve be quite the same again. SUNDAY 31 AUGUST Rainy day. Helen Utton appeared this P.M. in the rain, stirred up and very incoherent about losing her job, etc. I think she is definitely crazy and should be in a place where she can be looked after. OCTOBER 3 FRIDAY Sesquicentennial. Faculty Day - began with an hour at the office on details for the tea and the reception tomorrow. Went to Southwick to 11:00 meeting. Heard Mr. Odell Shepard from Trinity, later had buffet lunch then home to freshen up & back to hear Mr. Learned and Dr. Packer. In the evening gathered in the Chapel to hear President Angell who was very good Elspeth writes she will be here early next week and that is fortunate as Mrs. Ryan can only stay until Tuesday at the latest. OCTOBER 4 SATURDAY Sesquicentennial began with fine Convocation, then the procession marched to Waterman where ceremonies of dedication took place. At 3:30 I went to Southwick for Open House and at 6:30 to the Austin's for dinner - 16 there very pleasant and a good dinner. Went to S again for the reception to Gov. Wills but so tired that I did not stay after 11:00. On the whole, except for the poor lunch today, everything went off very well. Miss Nicholson was superb. SUNDAY 5 OCTOBER Went to Swift's for dinner and while there Dr. Packer called to ask me to join Trustees, which I did, to meet Dr. & Mrs. Fitzgerald from the University of Pittsburg. Went to Vespers, then took care of Mrs. Wills for a while, home for lunch and then to concert at Chapel. OCTOBER 6 MONDAY Hoped to get away this morning but found so many things to do at the office that I could not leave until noon. Came home and put the place in order, ran cleaner over rugs, dusted, packed what was necessary and left at 3:00 went over the mountain and struck a very different temperature when I descended on the east side. Very lovely color. As soon as I arrived Mrs. Ryan wanted to go home so I drove her over and came back to deal with domestic problems. Made sweet cucumber Pickle this evening after I had Mother safely in bed. Did not finish until nearly midnight - Very weary. OCTOBER 7 TUESDAY Up early built two fires and started in on the many things that must be done before we can close the house. Washed a bit, ironed finished the sweet pickles, packed Mother's things, cooked the meals, recieved callers etc. but by 3:30 I saw that it was useless to try going tonight. Elspeth called to say she was back and I told her to call Constans and say that I would not be there until Wednesday. Was invited to go to the annual meeting of the Children's Aid at Montpelier today and would have enjoyed going but much too busy to take time off for that. OCTOBER 8 WEDNESDAY Came down to Burlington with mother This morning I was up early and fairly flew about getting the necessary things done so we could leave before noon. Finally got off about 11:30. Came over Eden Mt. and altho' it was not bright and sunny as it had been last week, the colors were lovely and Mother enjoyed the ride and did not get too tired. Elspeth here when we arrived and a hot bath, fresh clothes and a good lunch revived me so that I went to the office and worked hard until nearly six o'clock. Spent the evening at home for a change and got to bed early, very weary indeed but so glad to have Mother safely here. She likes being here and it is wonderful to have her back with me. She is not as strong as I wish she were. That attack of grip took her strength. OCTOBER 9 THURSDAY 2:00 Teacher's Convention 5:30 A.A.U.W Black Cat. 6:00 Women Teachers' Club Banquet, Hotel Vt. Lovely drive up, had dinner at Jean's, built fires in house and did a good bit of work, including pulling the glads and storing them in the cellar, also tried to get my talk for tonight ready, Helen drove with me to Orleans. a good audience but I was far OCTOBER 20 MONDAY from adequte. Strange why sometimes I can get across what I want to say easily and again no effort is enough to do it. The "spark" was not there tonight and I felt spent and baffled when it was over. Drive back to Jean's was pleasant - Stars out, clear & cold. Jean had a nice supper waiting - cold chicken salad, hot rolls, etc. My room, as usual there, was much too warm and I slept badly. Was up and off early in the morning. Water spurted over the top of the tank and ran down in the hall, leaving bad stains on ceiling - the place needs so many repairs and so much done that it discourages me to contemplate it but next year I may be able to improve it a bit. OCTOBER 22 WEDNESDAY Moved today. 10:00 - 6:00 Sale of Handi crafts. 439 So. Willard St OCTOBER 23 THURSDAY Social Work Conference Oct. 23 & 24 Left after a very hectic morning and half-dead already, an hour later than planned. For the long drive Brattleboro for Social Work conference. Prof. Gifford went with me. It poured rain all day. This A.M. met Walter & Jessie at office and drove them around the campus to show then the building etc. then they came over here to call on mother. That delayed me but at 1:00 we were off. Slow driving but we reached B. at 5:00 and I went to Mrs. Brungardt's for a cup of tea and a brief rest before the meeting. Very pleasant. I sat by the Governor and the program was not too long. Miss Webster there. My talk went over much better than I expected. Good bed and slept well. OCTOBER 24 FRIDAY It had cleared off beautifully this morning. I was up and off early. Drove restfully at 40 mi. per hr. and enjoyed the color. Got out several times to gather oak leaves for my office. Stopped in Rutland to see Mrs. Gary. She is very lame, poor lady. Home about 1:30 before they expected me. Back to the office and find everything settled and I'm sure that I am going to like it much better than I had expected to. The north light is lovely and saves much eye strain. Busy day. OCTOBER 25 SATURDAY Was down at Robert's House this A.M. where James called me from Albany to say he had three days off and he arrived at 5:40. We had a huge steak for dinner to celebrate. He looks thin & tired. He called home and we are going up there tomorrow, taking Janet with us. It is nice to have James here but he must be back on Tues. A.M. SUNDAY 26 OCTOBER Left at 10:00 and went over Eden Mt which was covered with snow Had dinner with Helen & Will and James saw his family, while I worked in the house, putting things away and packing canned goods. Came back via Cambridge & stopped to see Reg & Adeline OCTOBER 27 MONDAY who have moved to a lovely farm on Smuggler's Notch road. Home about 8:00 had supper and glad to get to bed. Today James drove out to see Ina then came back to inspect Waterman Bldg. and I took him down to the farm at 12:15. My knee gives me much pain and threatens to collapse under me any minute. I ought to see Dr. Bellrose tomorrow but don't know that I can get out of the office long enough. OCTOBER 29 WEDNESDAY Very trying day. Went over to move and on way into new quarters fell flat, hurting my game knee and giving me a severe shaking up. Do not like the new place very well yet OCTOBER 30 THURSDAY Womens Student Union Association Convention here Rained today but the tea was nice altho not as many students came as I had hoped. Several deans are to be here - in fact have already begun to arrive 4:00 Tea by Ladies of Faculty. 6:00 Informal dinner. OCTOBER 31 FRIDAY Very busy day indeed. W&ASG meeting and then home to dress for Dean's dinner at Grassmount which was very pleasant. Dean Ross of Middlebury there but as usual, a bit cold and formal. We then went to the play "Death Takes a Holiday" in pouring rain. It was very good. NOVEMBER 1 SATURDAY Busy morning: went to Southwick for business session and to hear Prof Dykhuizen's fine talk. Home to lunch, marketing, errands and ended day with big convention banquet at Waterman Bldg. which was very nice Dr. Caroline came to speak and stay at Southwick. Both Dorothy and Margaret Paterson appeared for examination. Margaret was best of day's lot. Had a very good lunch at the Tavern and drove home arriving a bit after seven for dinner. Very weary tonight. NOVEMBER 6 THURSDAY Up early again but not to a bright day, gloomy and dark finally began to rain and continued all day. Same routine as yesterday but not so good a group on the whole except for Mary Gibson. Grace Weaver and Alice Brock turned up. Both have grown a bit more human since I last saw them. Got thro' about 6:00 but struck thick fog on the way home so I had to drive very slowly the first half of the trip and was late for dinner. Tried to get up energy to go to office this evening but could not do it. Will try to get there at 8:00 tomorrow. NOVEMBER 8 SATURDAY Delta Kappa Gamma at Putney School. Took a car full and we had a most interesting day and a very good meeting. Putney School is a unique experiment in progressive education and I enjoyed meeting Mrs. Hinton and her staff. John called about noon so we spoke briefly to him and to Betty. They had both been to church. We had roast beef for dinner.
