<l>Washington May 8 1820</l>
<l>My dearest Friend,</l>
<l>When I wrote you last week I thought that</l>
<l>would be the last I should write you from this place,</l>
<l>for I was determined to set out for home at this time.</l>
<l>Since writing that letter Congress has agreed upon the day</l>
<l>to adjourn, which is on monday next. The business before</l>
<l>congress is of such a nature, that there is a great unwilling-</l>
<l>ness to allow any member leave of absence, unless in case</l>
<l>of sickness. Not more than eight or ten have yet left con-</l>
<l>gress. I have enjoyed my usual good health but get no</l>
<l>letters from home, it is now a month since I have heard</l>
<l>from you, or indeed from Samuel- I cannot account</l>
<l>for his not writing as his letters would come in about a</l>
<l>week, and if you or the family were sick, I should think </l>
<l>that Mr Corbin, or some of my friends would give me</l>
<l>information of it- I pray you may all be well.</l>
<l>When I leave here I shall proceed as fast as possible & shall</l>
<l>probably be home sooner than a letter would be conveyed</l>
<l>by mail- and therefore shall not write again before I </l>
<l>see you- That you & the children may enjoy every</l>
<l>Blessing is the sincere prayer of your constant & affectionate</l>
<l>friend Samuel</l>
