					<l>Washington April 30 1842</l>
					<l>My dear Nathan and Mary,</l>
					<l>I have at present only time to inform you that</l>
					<l>I arrived early at this place about day light this morning.</l>
					<l>The journey has been rapid, but not very fatiguing.  I ar-</l>
					<l>rived about sundown at Burlington on the day I left home,</l>
					<l>and finding a letter from Gov. Paine that he would be at</l>
					<l>Burlington on Wednesday evening and wished me to tarry there</l>
					<l>until that time as he proposed to accompany me as far as</l>
					<l>Troy, provided his father, Judge Paine, should remain as</l>
					<l>well as he then appeared (having been dangerously sick.)</l>
					<l>I of course spent Wednesday at Burlington, and called upon,</l>
					<l>and <hi rend='underlined:true;'>was</hi> called upon, by most of the gentleman of that place.</l>
					<l>But as the Gov. did not arrive in the [ ] stage, as </l>
					<l>was expected, I took the boat Wednesday evening and by Thurs-</l>
					<l>day evening I was at Albany in season to take the evening</l>
					<l>boat to N York. and arrived at New York in season to</l>
					<l>enter the railroad cars for this place, and by travelling Fri-</l>
					<l>day and Friday night- I arrived here early this morning-</l>
					<l>being but three days and three nights in coming near [ ]</l>
					<l>hundred miles- without suffering any very great fatigue.</l>
					<l>I found Judge Phelps, our other Senator, who has introduced</l>
				</lg>
			</p>
			<pb n='2'/>
			<p>
				<lg>
					<l>into the Senate where I have taken the oath of Office.</l>
					<l>I have found a few old acquaintances.  I have not yet</l>
					<l>seen Mr Young- but shall look him up after our adjourn-</l>
					<l>ment.  I find the trees and vegetation much more forward</l>
					<l>than at home, I found peaches in bloom near Troy, NY.</l>
					<l>in New Jersey the apple trees are generally in blossom, also</l>
					<l>lilacks [lilacs]- at Washington the trees are nearly in full leaf.</l>
					<l>I also saw sno</l>
					<l>w</l>
					<l>balls, and fleur de lis in full bloom-</l>
					<l>I have not time to write much <hi rend='strikethrough:true;'>at this time</hi>, as the</l>
					<l>yeas and Nays are about being taken, and I shall be required</l>
					<l>to vote.  You must accept this only as an intonation</l>
					<l>that I am here and well.  I have not yet selected a</l>
					<l>boarding house-am at present at a tavern, and shall</l>
					<l>probably tarry there for a few days-</l>
					<l>Accept my love- and please to give my love</l>
					<l>to Mrs Corbins, Mrs Clarks and our other friends when you</l>
					<l>see them.  I will write more particularly when I have</l>
					<l>time.</l>
					<l>Saml C Crafts</l>
					<l>I will send you an Intelligencer</l>
					<l>regularly as soon as they can be procured,</l>
					<l>which will commence next monday.</l>
