<l>Washington Dec 3d 1821</l>
<l>Dear Samuel,</l>
<l>I have at length arrived at Washington, and in good </l>
<l>health: I wrote to you from Albany, giving an account of my </l>
<l>progress, so far; I will now give you an account of the re-</l>
<l>mainder of my journey. The steam boat which I expected to find</l>
<l>at Albany on wednesday morning, by an alteration in the times</l>
<l>of departure, did not go to New York until Thursday morning, by </l>
<l>which arrangement, a day is lost; but fortunately I found a [ ] </l>
<l>steam boat going to N. York on Wednesday evening - in which we </l>
<l>took our passage and arrived at N York on Thursday evening.</l>
<l>Friday night we tarried at Trenton in New Jersey, 70 miles from N. </l>
<l>York- Saturday morning we took the line of steam boats on the </l>
<l>Delaware and Chesapeake Bay and arrived at Baltimore at 4</l>
<l>o'clock, on Sunday morning, being a distance of 156 miles in </l>
<l>22 hours. From Baltimore to Washington is only 40 miles, which </l>
<l>we travelled on Sunday. Congress met this day and have spent</l>
<l>it in [ ] Speaker [ ] </l>
<l>[ ] stands at the [ ] the candidate </l>
<l>and it is thought the he will finally be elected. I have not yet</l>
<l>taken lodging, but remain at a tavern. I have been looking </l>
<l>round, and expect that Mr Palmer, Gen Mattocks, Col Rich and </l>
<l>myself have agreed to take lodging together - and I expect we shall </l>
<l>take our lodgings tomorrow. There is no snow at Washington - but </l>
<l>I found it all the way until I reached Baltimore- I have no con-</l>
<l>venience for writing - at present - but will write to your Mama & </l>
<l>Mary next week. Give them my best love</l>
