<l>Washington April 16 1820</l>
<l>My dearest friend,</l>
<l>I am well, and extremely anxious to return</l>
<l>to those whom, above all others, I wish to see again; and what</l>
<l>gives me the most trouble at present is that I cannot exactly</l>
<l>ascertain on what day I can leave here- There is some</l>
<l>business to be transacted in which the whole country is very</l>
<l>materially interested- and which I <hi rend='strikethrough:true;'>cannot leave</hi> am unwilling</l>
<l>to leave, lest I shall be accused of deserting my post before</l>
<l>the business is through, out of fear of the consequence- I allude</l>
<l>to the raising the duties on almost every article imported, to</l>
<l>stop all trade with Canada- &c which under our present si-</l>
<l>tuation would nearly ruin Vermont- as soon as this busi-</l>
<l>ness is disposed of, which I expect will not require more than </l>
<l>one or two weeks, I intend to get leave of absence and go</l>
<l>home whether Congress adjourns or not- I feel considerable</l>
<l>anxiety about the affairs at home- If Mr. Hidden is with</l>
<l>you I shall feel less- but he will hardly know what to do-</l>
<l>It was my intention to plant with corn that piece of ground</l>
<l>East of Garfields garden which contains about an acres- The</l>
<l>piece down North of the barns on which potatoes & flax were</l>
<l>raised last year being two or more acres, I intended to sow</l>
<l>with wheat- and the hog pasture North of Garfields house</l>
<l>extending down so as to make 2 or 3 acres should be be broke up</l>
<l>and prepared for potatoes- I wish the fence around the</l>

<l>square by Garfields house to be patched up so as to answer</l>
<l>for a few weeks, until I can get home when I intend to re-</l>
<l>plow part of it with a board fence- If the spring should</l>
<l>be</l>
<l>dry</l>
<l>enought to burn brush- I want Mr. Hidden to clear off an</l>
<l>acre or two where Garfield got wood this year or two past</l>
<l>and sow it with oats &c- I mention this not because I do</l>
<l>not expect to be at home before it will be time to plant-&c</l>
<l>but that he may be making the necesssary preparations- for</l>
<l>I will be at home at any rate, if I am well- as I am</l>
<l>fully determined not to remain here more than two weeks</l>
<l>longer, if so long- let business here go as it will- If you</l>
<l>like Charles Marsh, you better keep him until I get home</l>
<l>if not for the whole season- we shall need some help &</l>
<l>I will be willing to give him as much as he can get any</l>
<l>where else- If the garden gets dry enough to plow I</l>
<l>wish Charles or Mr. Hiden to cart in several loads of ma-</l>
<l>nure and spread it before it is plowed- and also secure</l>
<l>some garden seeds if any are for sale- you will pardon</l>
<l>me for undertaking to interfere <hi rend='underlined:true;'>my advice</hi> in the man-</l>
<l>agement. I only sugest [suggest] them for fear that Mr. Hidden</l>
<l>would not know what calculations would suit best-</l>
<l>I hope you have received my letters before this-</l>
<l>I write a line to Mary</l>
<l>yours sincerely</l>
