					<l>Washington Feb.28</l>
					<l>[1844]</l>
					<l>A most awful calamity has </l>
					<l>this moment transpired &amp; overspread</l>
					<l>this city gloom. The steam ship</l>
					<l>of war Princeton has been here for</l>
					<l>two weeks past. There is mounted upon</l>
					<l>her two [<unclear>wooden</unclear>] wrought iron cannon</l>
					<l>which carry a boll of over 200 lbs &amp;</l>
					<l>it requires for a charge between 30 &amp; 40</l>
					<l>lbs of powder..The week before last</l>
					<l>she was visited by the President, &amp; heads</l>
					<l>of departments, military &amp; several officers</l>
					<l>&amp; the military &amp; <unclear>[Word] [Word] </unclear>of the</l>
					<l>two houses &amp; the guns were repeatedly fired.</l>
					<l>Last week she was visited by the members</l>
					<l>of the two houses generally &amp; they witnessed</l>
					<l>also the opperation of the vessel &amp; the guns.</l>
					<l><unclear>[It was of this day]</unclear></l>
					<l>This day a party, consisting of gentlemen</l>
					<l>with their ladies, visited the ship &amp; one</l>
					<l>of those large guns exploded. It spread</l>
					<l>destruction &amp; death around it. Mr Upshur</l>
					<l>Secretary of State - Gov. Gilmer, Secretary of</l>
					<l>the Navy, Commodore Kennon, Colonel</l>
					<l>Gardner &amp; Virgil Maxey of Maryland &amp; five</l>
					<l>seamen were killed. Capt. Stocklow who</l>
					<l>commanded the ship is injured, but it is</l>
					<l>thought to be only by the concussion and</l>

					<l>not dangerously. No ladies were injured.</l>
					<l>I wrote to Harriet an account of</l>
					<l>my visit to the ships, last week</l>
					<l>Should this letter reach you before</l>
					<l>the news reaches you otherwise, let the</l>
					<l>matter be known, but my main</l>
					<l>object in writing is that you may know</l>
					<l>I was safely at home this day for which</l>
					<l>I desire to be grateful.</l>
					<l>Some were there from our mess as</l>
					<l>it was expected there was to be dancing</l>
					<l>&amp; a ball on board in evening</l>
					<l>Mr. Upham &amp; lady were there but are</l>
					<l>uninjured.</l>
