<l>Washington City</l>
<l>Feb 2. 1845</l>
<l>William,</l>
<l>I noticed implied by the papers that </l>
<l>the books were to be offered for subscription</l>
<l>to the new bank in Woodstock but did not</l>
<l>notice the time. You may proceed to subscribe</l>
<l>fifty shares and see if you can pay for them</l>
<l>out of money collected on my book. I think</l>
<l>it would be a good acquisition if you can</l>
<l>effect it. Should you find it necessary</l>
<l>to take money in anticipation of collections </l>
<l>(which I trust you will not be compelled to do)</l>
<l>you can use money of mine in back, as I here</l>
<l>[<unclear>inclose</unclear>] you a draft of two hundred dollars</l>
<l>which I wish you to hand Mr. Johnson and</l>
<l>have it passed to my credit. And remember </l>
<l>immediately on the receipt of this to write</l>
<l>me, that I may know the draft came safely </l>
<l>to hand.</l>
<l>In relation to speaking on Texas I</l>
<l>did as I phrased and word a speech which</l>
<l>unnoticed</l>
<l>did not fall <hi rend='strikethrough:true;'>unnoticed</hi> on the house. I have</l>
<l>sent copies , but do not feel quite certain </l>
<l>how far it will be acceptable.</l>

<l>The case in which I am engaged in the Supreme</l>
<l>Court here will not be reached this term, and</l>
<l>I am glad it passes over, as it will give me</l>
<l>time for better preparation.</l>
<l>It is now very cold here and although the</l>
<l>thermometer would probably not show a lower</l>
<l>degree than probably 10 or 15 above zero yet</l>
<l>to our feeling it seems as cold as zero in</l>
<l>Vermont. Here whenever it is cold it is also</l>
<l>windy. No snow.</l>
<l>My friend Geo. Green of Ky. Remains</l>
<l>sick and keeps his room. He is troubled with</l>
<l>grave complaints but it is here a very general</l>
<l>time of health.</l>
<l>My being excused from the committee </l>
<l>on public lands has been to me this session a</l>
<l>great relief as the committee on Manufactures </l>
<l>to which I belong has little to do.</l>
<l>Nothing will be agitated in relation to</l>
<l>the tariff this session. As to Texas its fate is yet</l>
<l>extremely uncertain in the Senate</l>
<l>I remain</l>
<l>Your Affectionate Father</l>
<l>J. Collamer</l>
<l>W. Collamer</l>
<l>P. S. I have written this day to Harriet </l>
<l>& sent there & send here my love to all.</l>
