					<l>Washington City</l>
					<l>Dec 3. 1848</l>
					<l>Mary,</l>
					<l>I accomplished my journey here in </l>
					<l>the manner and in the time I contemplated.</l>
					<l>I reached Boston between 7 &amp; 8 of the day I left</l>
					<l>home, but did not go out of the house that </l>
					<l>evening, &amp; started at 7 next morning for N. Y.</l>
					<l>where I arrived about 8 oclock in the evening.</l>
					<l>I went to the Pruing House, usually &amp;</l>
					<l>kept by the Howards. It is certainly a nice</l>
					<l>house.        I found Capt Simmons &amp; Lady there</l>
					<l>who said they intended to be at Woodstoock </l>
					<l>to Thanksgiving &amp; therefore are probably there</l>
					<l>when this reaches you. I called on Mrs Phelps</l>
					<l>on Thursday, who was not very well but said </l>
					<l>she would go shopping with me next day, and</l>
					<l>that was as well for I could as well leave</l>
					<l>for Philadelphia in the afternoon as in the</l>
					<l>morning. I looked around some with my</l>
					<l>friend Mr. Nichol, on Thursday and on Friday</l>
					<l>morning Mrs Phelps went with me and</l>
					<l>after visiting &amp; examining, she took</l>

				<lg>
					<l>me to [Seaman] &amp; there selected a cloak.</l>
					<l>Mr Seaman, with whom I have been well acquainted</l>
					<l>in Congress, undertook to see it forwarded by express</l>
					<l>to P. I hope it will safely arrive and be satisfactory</l>
					<l>This is the same place where I selected silk</l>
					<l>drapes last summer.       In the afternoon of</l>
					<l>Friday I went to Philadelphia in company with </l>
					<l>a large number of members, and on Saturday </l>
					<l>we came on here with a crowd. I have come</l>
					<l>to the same house (Mrs. Ubricks) where I last boarded</l>
					<l>more than a mile from the Capitol &amp; will once</l>
					<l>more try the walk. Three of the old mess are here &amp;</l>
					<l>some more are soon to join. I arrived here last</l>
					<l>night almost nine and am fully well, have been</l>
					<l>to meeting, not to church, though. I find the</l>
					<l>[<unclear>Missing Line</unclear>] [<unclear>There Was of Her</unclear>]</l>
					<l>church close by, (Rev. Mr. Pink) with his wife </l>
					<l>&amp; daughter.</l>
					<l>I have unpacked my trunk and do</l>
					<l>not find that I have lost anything, not even</l>
					<l>my glasses, but one thing I forgot and that</l>
					<l>is the key to my box here. It was on the ring</l>
					<l><unclear>[</unclear><unclear>Word Wrod Word</unclear><unclear> of my bank &amp; other sent part fall]</unclear></l>
					<l>when we went to St. Albans I took my trunk</l>
					<l>key off the ring &amp; that is the only key I brought</l>
					<l>away. I must break open the box.</l>
				</lg>
			</p>
			<pb n='3'/>
			<p>
				<lg>
					<l>All is quiet here &amp; I think the session</l>
					<l>will be a quiet one &amp; still until the last part </l>
					<l>of February when the seekers for office under Gen</l>
					<l>Taylor shall come on.        I have a different</l>
					<l>room from the one I had last winter or Summer</l>
					<l>otherwise it would seem as if I had hardly been</l>
					<l>absent at all.</l>
					<l>Tomorrow the House will meet but as [<unclear>all</unclear>]</l>
					<l>the Speaker and other officers of the House are already</l>
					<l>appointed there will be nothing done but to</l>
					<l>have a lottery for seats.</l>
					<l>So now with my love to you &amp; our children</l>
					<l>&amp; our children - Good night</l>
					<l>Yours Affectionately</l>
					<l>J. Collamer</l>
