					<l>Washington City</l>
					<l>May 9th 1858</l>
					<l>Mary,</l>
					<l>Yours post marked May 7th</l>
					<l>(Friday) I recd. here this morning (Sunday)</l>
					<l>You say the girls went with Dr.</l>
					<l>[<unclear>Russel</unclear>] &amp; Mr Johnson &amp; families to Meriden</l>
					<l>at the graduation of Charlie &amp; William &amp;</l>
					<l>had returned. Tell the girls that one</l>
					<l>of them must write me all the particulars</l>
					<l>of the excursion &amp; the occasion.</l>
					<l>You say the garden must not be</l>
					<l>expected to look as well as when present</l>
					<l>myself. Perhaps not, but I hope that <unclear>[Paues</unclear>]</l>
					<l>will see that all the necessary garden</l>
					<l>vegetables are fully attended to.</l>
					<l>Mrs Billings&apos; dear friend Mrs Douglass,</l>
					<l>for her husband, had a large party of</l>
				</lg>
			</p>
			<pb n='2'/>
			<p>
				<lg>
					<l>gentlemen last Thursday evening, com-</l>
					<l>posed mainly of the Physicians, several</l>
					<l>hundred in number, who have been</l>
					<l>holding a large meeting here. I did not </l>
					<l>attend. I think there have been no</l>
					<l>parties here of late.</l>
					<l>One of our body, Judge Evans of South</l>
					<l>Carolina died Suddenly on Thursday</l>
					<l>evening, having been in his seat in the</l>
					<l>Senate during the day. We attended his</l>
					<l>funeral yesterday with the usual</l>
					<l>ceremonies</l>
					<l>Mr. Morrill returned from his visit</l>
					<l>north, last evening &amp; says he found his</l>
					<l>wife &amp; child in usual health.</l>
					<l>The city grows more quiet since the</l>
					<l>spring opens &amp; Kansas is ended; and I</l>
					<l>see no reason to believe that our</l>
					<l>Session will be protracted beyond the</l>
					<l>time now fixed for adjournment</l>
					<l>June 7th.</l>

					<l>I for the amusement of </l>
					<l>the girls a story here understood to</l>
					<l>be Substantially true. I understand</l>
					<l>that Mr. left here last</l>
					<l>Saturday with his daughter for New</l>
					<l>York to leave there for Europe to spend</l>
					<l>the Summer.</l>
					<l>Mr Ewing is now here whom you</l>
					<l>know I am always pleased to meet.</l>
					<l>I had a letter from Edward about</l>
					<l>the middle of April saying he was well</l>
					<l>&amp; doing as well as he could. Keeps </l>
					<l>good resolutions &amp;c.</l>
					<l>As to my bad boil, it is healed up</l>
					<l>but is so tender that I still have to</l>
					<l>keep a bandage on it.</l>
					<l>Give my respects to Dr. &amp; Mrs Clement</l>
					<l>&amp; neighbors &amp; my love to my children &amp;</l>
					<l>grand children, &amp; accept the same from</l>
					<l>Your Affectionate</l>
					<l>Husband</l>
