					<l>Washington City</l>
					<l>July 8th 1848</l>
					<l>Mary,</l>
					<l>I did wrong to entertain myself or to create </l>
					<l>in others a hope of being able to visit you in the</l>
					<l>fore part of July when it was so uncertain, indeed</l>
					<l>so improbable. That Windsor Case in Congress continues</l>
					<l>as it was before, and cannot be left. The time for</l>
					<l>adjournment is as uncertain as ever</l>
					<l>July 11.</l>
					<l>The much agitated question as to slavery</l>
					<l>being admitted into the newly acquired territory</l>
					<l>now constitutes the of conversation among</l>
					<l>the members, and no time of adjournment will</l>
					<l>be concluded on until a conclusion is made</l>
					<l>whether that is to be settled at this session. It </l>
					<l>therefore becomes daily more &amp; more uncertain</l>
					<l>I presume my brother George will be</l>
					<l>at Woodstock at the State Convention on the</l>
					<l>19th of this month &amp; hope he may bring Lucina</l>
					<l>with him to see you. I do not think it has </l>
					<l>yet been quite as hot here as it was in July</l>
					<l>when you was here, that is, it has not been so</l>
				</lg>
			</p>
			<pb n='2'/>
			<p>
				<lg>
					<l>so extremely hot so many days in succession. Rainy</l>
					<l>days have intervened.</l>
					<l>the Capitol</l>
					<l>The long pole or mast on ^ near 100 feet long, with</l>
					<l>a [<unclear>fauthorn</unclear>] on it, so large as to contain six men, </l>
					<l>after being kept up about six months, has been taken</l>
					<l>down, as it was considered dangerous, loosening</l>
					<l>and weakening the dome by the strain of high</l>
					<l>winds upon it &amp; endangering the Capitol by the</l>
					<l>attraction of lightning.</l>
					<l>Making Presidential speeches has become extremely</l>
					<l>dull in the house&amp; indeed you know this is a place</l>
					<l>too hot, fussy &amp; sweaty to be endured with any </l>
					<l>degree of patience in the summer; but I must </l>
					<l>stay as well as I can, while my health permits,</l>
					<l>and I do not know but I am about as well</l>
					<l>as usual.</l>
					<l>Ellen says she is to go to Mrs Peabodys in the fall,</l>
					<l>very well. Franky has gone to as you have</l>
					<l>have long desired. I hope it will do her good. Will</l>
					<l>she be content there, without Catherine? Perhaps</l>
					<l>she will if she thinks she should.</l>
					<l>Mary, I wish to select something acceptable,</l>
					<l>of reasonable cost, to carry to each of my children &amp;</l>
					<l>I request you to suggest to me what it should be</l>
					<l><hi rend='strikethrough:true;'>I</hi></l>
					<l>God bless you all, Good night </l>
					<l>Your Affectionate</l>
					<l>Husband</l>
					<l>J. Collamer</l>
