					<l>Washington City</l>
					<l>April 13.1836</l>
					<l>Mary,</l>
					<l>My Kansas Speech is not only</l>
					<l>delivered but is printed &amp; I send you</l>
					<l>a copy. I do not require you to read</l>
					<l>it, but you may see its length and</l>
					<l>labor. I was unwell after it but</l>
					<l>am now quite as well as usual.</l>
					<l>The spring is very backward. The</l>
					<l>grass in the public ground just beings</l>
					<l>to look green but no appearance </l>
					<l>of leaves on the trees. Last evening</l>
					<l>it was hot, sultry. Thermometer at</l>
					<l>80 &amp; a shower. Today it is cool but</l>
					<l>pleasant.</l>
					<l>Two weeks since Mrs. Hall</l>
					<l>had a small evening party &amp; the</l>
					<l>family plate &amp;c was left in the</l>

					<l>refreshment room and the next</l>
					<l>morning it was missing &amp; the front</l>
					<l>door was found unlocked . Amongst</l>
					<l>the articles taken was a silver</l>
					<l>waiter worth $50. The loss was about</l>
					<l>150 dollars. It is a little curious</l>
					<l>that some of the most valuable ar-</l>
					<l>ticles standing with the others were</l>
					<l>not taken. It is thought the thief</l>
					<l>supposed them plated &amp; not silver.</l>
					<l>Another house in the same vicin-</l>
					<l>ity was robbed the same night &amp;</l>
					<l>about double the amount of plate</l>
					<l>taken.</l>
					<l>It is much more the practice</l>
					<l>now to be absent on visits home</l>
					<l>by members than when I was formerly</l>
					<l>in Congress. I entertain the in-</l>
					<l>tention to avail myself of this </l>
					<l>practice &amp; visit my family some</l>
					<l>time this spring or forepart of</l>
					<l>summer. In doing so I shall</l>
				</lg>
			</p>
			<pb n='3'/>
			<p>
				<lg>
					<l>much rely on your opinion as</l>
					<l>to time. I should like to go in May</l>
					<l>but you know I regard June as the</l>
					<l>perfection of beauty in Vermont &amp;</l>
					<l>I feel as if I could not entirely loose</l>
					<l>it this year. You &amp; Mary must</l>
					<l>let me know what you think on</l>
					<l>this point.</l>
					<l>No news to write but the</l>
					<l>good news of being quite as well</l>
					<l>as usual.</l>
					<l>Love to you all</l>
					<l>Your Affectionate</l>
					<l>Husband</l>
