					<l>Washington City</l>
					<l>Feb 24. 1856</l>
					<l>Mary,</l>
					<l>Sunday evening has</l>
					<l>again returned to me and sitting</l>
					<l>alone in my chamber my mind</l>
					<l>is of course with you, &amp; though I</l>
					<l>have nothing of interest to write</l>
					<l>you I wish still to speak with you.</l>
					<l>My health is much as usual.</l>
					<l>You know I have occasionally</l>
					<l>some bad days. Yesterday &amp; last</l>
					<l>evening &amp; night my stomach and </l>
					<l>bowels were painful, but I am</l>
					<l>much better to day &amp; have been</l>
					<l>to meeting &amp; this evening I feel </l>
					<l>as well as usual.</l>
					<l>The weather moderated here</l>
					<l>last Thursday &amp; has been tolerably</l>
					<l>pleasant since. Mrs. Hall gave</l>
					<l>a party Thursday evening and</l>
				</lg>

			<p>
				<lg>
					<l>Mr. Foot being unwell I went </l>
					<l>with Mrs. Foot. It was a pleasant</l>
					<l>party, more particularly because it</l>
					<l>was not crowded. Their house ac-</l>
					<l>commodates a tolerable sized party </l>
					<l>very well. I gave your respects to</l>
					<l>Mrs. Hall, as you wrote. Mrs. Montgom-</l>
					<l>ery was there &amp; made inquiries for</l>
					<l>you.</l>
					<l>I have an invitation to dine</l>
					<l>with the President next Thursday</l>
					<l>&amp; shall of course attend if well.</l>
					<l>I have been to none of the receptions</l>
					<l>of the President or Cabinet this</l>
					<l>winter except that of the Postmaster</l>
					<l>general.</l>
					<l>I have been compelled to buy</l>
					<l>me a dress coat &amp; a vest, &amp; I shall</l>
					<l>have also to get another pair of</l>
					<l>pants as I have but a single pair.</l>
					<l>You was entirely write in rela-</l>
					<l>tion to my cloak. It is of great</l>
				</lg>
			</p>
			<pb n='3'/>
			<p>
				<lg>
					<l>service to me. The new overcoat </l>
					<l>I had I find very heavy &amp; warm</l>
					<l>&amp; in a mild day, though not warm</l>
					<l>enough to dispose with an overgar-</l>
					<l>ment, I find that coat quite</l>
					<l>too much.</l>
					<l>I regret to hear that D. Thayer</l>
					<l>does not succeed. We need him for</l>
					<l>the Success of our school. I have</l>
					<l>had a curiosity to know who would</l>
					<l>occupy the Henry house &amp; have</l>
					<l>thought it possible Dr. Thayer might</l>
					<l>prefer to come into our street. </l>
					<l>Charles Chapman will now, when</l>
					<l>Whitney leaves the Hotel, of course </l>
					<l>go to Poughkeepsing &amp; it is possible</l>
					<l>he may take the Hewey house.</l>
					<l>I am at present much occupied</l>
					<l>with the disturbing topic of</l>
					<l>Kansas business, it having been</l>
					<l>the</l>
					<l>referred to ^ Committee on Territories</l>
					<l>of which I am a member. It is</l>
				</lg>
			</p>
			<pb n='4'/>
			<p>
				<lg>
					<l>more unpleasant as I am the</l>
					<l>only northern man upon that</l>
					<l>committee.</l>
					<l>There is here to me an unexpected </l>
					<l>subject of annoyance in one of</l>
					<l>members from Vermont. Much</l>
					<l>to my astonishment I now find that</l>
					<l>Mr Meacham is a habitual</l>
					<l>private tippler and is often in</l>
					<l>such a condition from drink </l>
					<l>as to occasion general notice</l>
					<l>and remark in the House. He</l>
					<l>is unwell &amp; depressed &amp; has now</l>
					<l> been several days without drink</l>
					<l>and has had Dr. Lindaby. Mr. Mor-</l>
					<l>rill has labored much with him &amp;</l>
					<l>I believe his wife is sent for and it</l>
					<l>is possible he may be reclaimed but</l>
					<l>I fear not. Is it not wonderful</l>
					<l>our state has had a long list of</l>
					<l>such members, Mallory, Nole,</l>
					<l>Buck, Phelps, &amp;c.</l>
					<l>But Good Night</l>
					<l>&amp; love to you &amp; ours.</l>
					<l>J. Collamer</l>
