					<l>Washington City</l>
					<l>Dec 19. 1859.</l>
					<l>Dear Sir,</l>
					<l>I recd. yours of the 16th inst. </l>
					<l>You say &quot;the people of Vermont cannot </l>
					<l>realize how 15 whites &amp; 3 negroes can frighten </l>
					<l>the nation, &amp; Virginia in particular.&quot; </l>
					<l>The people of Virginia &amp; South are </l>
					<l>not alarmed &amp; excited by what was done</l>
					<l> by John Brown &amp; his associates. Indeed </l>
					<l>the circumstances &amp; results were essentially </l>
					<l>calculated to give them confidence &amp; </l>
					<l>security. It showed that their slaves are</l>
					<l> not inclined to revolt &amp; that when taken </l>
					<l>away by force they run back to their mas-</l>
					<l>ters. In the next place it shows that </l>
					<l>men who engage in such attempts, relying </l>
					<l>on the cooperation of the slaves, meet</l>
					<l> only disappointment &amp; death. </l>
					<l>The matter of their excitement and</l>

			<p>
				<lg>
					<l>and alarm is this. They found Brown </l>
					<l>had there new Sharps Rifles &amp; pistols to the</l>
					<l>amount in value of eight or ten thousand </l>
					<l>dollars &amp; near 1000 pikes &amp; money. Now all </l>
					<l>this implies countenance; support, and </l>
					<l>&quot;immaterial aid,&quot; exclusive &amp; effective, including </l>
					<l>wealth &amp; numbers. With this they are </l>
					<l>alarmed, and they have become anxious </l>
					<l>to know who has been &amp; who is willing to con-</l>
					<l>tribute to a civil &amp; servile war. It seems </l>
					<l>but just that instead of leaving the whole</l>
					<l>law abiding people of the north to lay </l>
					<l>under this imputation that those, if any, </l>
					<l>who have really &amp; intentionally promoted </l>
					<l>such a transaction should be disclosed. </l>
					<l>(I much doubt whether any who have given him contribution</l>
					<l>understood he was to apply it in the way he did.) </l>
					<l>This is what is professed to be affected &amp; </l>
					<l>you see the whole Republicans in the Senate</l>
					<l>voted in favor of the investigation. </l>
					<l>So long as it is pursued to this end we </l>
					<l>shall not embarrass it. It may be </l>
					<l>possible that another sinister purpose </l>
					<l>may be entertained by some, that is,</l>
				</lg>
			</p>
			<pb n='3'/>
			<p>
				<lg>
					<l>to make of it political capitol for</l>
					<l> the Presidential election. against that we </l>
					<l>must, as far as practicable, guard; <hi rend='strikethrough:true;'>but</hi></l>
					<l><hi rend='strikethrough:true;'>I must in candor &amp; sincerity say to you</hi></l>
					<l><hi rend='strikethrough:true;'> this was an untimely as well as criminal </hi></l>
					<l><hi rend='strikethrough:true;'>affair &amp; can do our party no </hi><hi rend='underlined:true; strikethrough:true;'>good</hi><hi rend='strikethrough:true;'>, unless</hi></l>
					<l><hi rend='strikethrough:true;'> it appear that it was not promoted, </hi></l>
					<l><hi rend='strikethrough:true;'>aided, advised or approved by the </hi></l>
					<l><hi rend='strikethrough:true;'>Republican party. I shall use my best exer-</hi></l>
					<l><hi rend='strikethrough:true;'>tions to this, because I believe it true. </hi></l>
					<l>I have heard no suggestion yet of sending</l>
					<l> to Vermont for witnesses.</l>
					<l>I am, respectfully, </l>
					<l>Your Humble Servt</l>
					<l>J. Collamer</l>
					<l>C. H. Chapman, Esquire</l>
