					<l>Washington City </l>
					<l>Jan 30 1849</l>
					<l>Mary,</l>
					<l>It is now Tuesday evening and I</l>
					<l>have recd. no letter from home for some time</l>
					<l>past and I did not write last Sunday mainly</l>
					<l>on that account. We have had no mails from</l>
					<l>the north since last Saturday owing, as I under</l>
					<l>stand to the impassable conditions of the Susque</l>
					<l>hanna River at House de Grass, being blocked up</l>
					<l>with ice.</l>
					<l>All here is going on very quietly and </l>
					<l>very little show. The east room has been opened</l>
					<l>but one evening this winter. Our boarding house</l>
					<l>is very quiet also. The lady of Dr. Pine, Mrs. Rockwell</l>
					<l>of Connecticut to our but Mrs. Nichol</l>
					<l>of New York is expected tomorrow. Some rooms </l>
					<l>are taken for the visitors who are coming to the</l>
					<l>inauguration of Gen. Taylor. Here I cannot</l>
					<l>but remark that I was annoyed this morning</l>
					<l>by seeing in the Intelligencer of this day [<unclear>evening</unclear>]</l>
					<l>a long list of names of Managers for the Inauguration</l>
				</lg>
			</p>
			<pb n='2'/>
			<p>
				<lg>
					<l>Ball my own name. Now although it is here perfectly </l>
					<l>well understood that such appointments are made</l>
					<l>without the presence, knowledge or consent of the persons</l>
					<l>named yet I could not but think, what will the</l>
					<l>good people of Vermont and my good Christian friends</l>
					<l>[<unclear>her</unclear>] think of this. It is really wrong &amp; annoying to</l>
					<l>have such things done.</l>
					<l>I recd. a letter last week from Mr Moon from</l>
					<l>Montreal, where he is attending the Provincial Parliament.</l>
					<l>He says Hannah came home from St. Albans a few</l>
					<l>days after Mary came there and he expresses a wish</l>
					<l>to carry them to Montreal for a few days this winter.</l>
					<l>As much anxiety is felt and as much doubt</l>
					<l>and uncertainty prevails here as to who is to constitute</l>
					<l>Gen. Taylors Cabinet as there did at the commencement</l>
					<l>of the Session. The California fever is prevalent and</l>
					<l>the fear of cholera subsiding. We face now but one</l>
					<l>month left of the Session and I shall be happy to</l>
					<l>see it close &amp; return home. My health is as good</l>
					<l>as usual and if it continues I shall stay &amp; see Gen.</l>
					<l>Taylor inaugurated President March 5th &amp; then</l>
					<l>return as quick as possible.</l>
					<l>So now with love to you &amp; our children</l>
					<l>I must good night. </l>
					<l>Your Affectionate Husband</l>
					<l>J. Collamer</l>
