<l>Washington City</l>
<l>Feb. 13. 1859.</l>
<l>Mary,</l>
<l>Another week has passed since </l>
<l>I wrote Lizzie, who, no doubt, informed you; </l>
<l>& I am now quite as well as usual. There is</l>
<l> [is] now but three weeks left of the session. </l>
<l>I have recd. & answered a letter from </l>
<l>Frances since Ellen had a letter from Thomas </l>
<l>& I have, at the solicitation of the girls, </l>
<l>promised to visit them on my way home </l>
<l>at the close of the session. </l>
<l>A very unpleasant proposition, that is, </l>
<l>the acquisition of Cuba, is now agitated in </l>
<l>Congress & will occasion much discussion & </l>
<l>I may have to perform & present a full </l>
<l>speech on the subject. You know such a</l>

<lg>
<l>preparation & performance is a matter </l>
<l>of real work for me. Others may so entirely </l>
<l>discuss the matter that I shall feel excused.</l>
<l>A few days will determine. </l>
<l>I was out to dine one evening last week </l>
<l>at J. Thompson's Secretary of the Interior. It was </l>
<l>entirely a party of gentlemen & the dinner was </l>
<l>much as usual. Four Senators & the rest </l>
<l>members. On my return in the evening I </l>
<l>called at Mr. Sexton's party of gentlemen & </l>
<l>stopped a few minutes. I declined one</l>
<l> invitation to dine out next Tuesday. The </l>
<l>weather is now dry & fresh, but most of the </l>
<l>time it is rainy & damp, & in such weather </l>
<l>I go out as little as possible & never in the</l>
<l> evening. I have been this day to hear the </l>
<l><hi rend='underlined:true;'>Congregational</hi> minister Mr. Bassett. He </l>
<l>preaches in the church where Dr. Butler </l>
<l>once preached & where we used occasionally </l>
<l>to go with Mr & Mrs Buffington. His</l>

<l>discourse was mainly of slavery. His </l>
<l>audience very thin & indeed it is quite</l>
<l> obvious <hi rend='underlined:true;'>he</hi> will not succeed in getting up </l>
<l> a congregational church in this city. </l>
<l>It being settled that our Meetinghouse is </l>
<l>to be repaired, I suppose some other place </l>
<l>of worship must be had for the next season </l>
<l>& I hope some measures may be taken to </l>
<l>obtain the Town Hall, but presume they will </l>
<l>take no measures until the opening of next </l>
<l>spring. I think the arrangements for our </l>
<l>work should now be entered upon immediately. </l>
<l>I suspect from what Mr. Williams wrote me</l>
<l> that no meeting for action will be holden be-</l>
<l>fore my time of return. I need write no more </l>
<l>of this as I presume it is enough a topic of </l>
<l>conversation at home without my writing. </l>
<l>We hereafter meet at 11 o clock instead of </l>
<l>12, So have time for nothing in the morning </l>
<l>but I make it up at night, never going to bed </l>
<l>before 12 o clock.</l>
<l>Love to all. Good night-</l>
<l>.Affectionately Your Husband.</l>

<l>P.S. </l>
<l>Monday Morning (Feb. 14) </l>
<l>Just recd. Mary's note of last Friday. </l>
<l>All well. Tell her Mr. Ewing says Mrs. Sherman </l>
<l>now resides at Levenworth Kansas & her health</l>
<l> is now good.</l>
