					<l>Mary,</l>
					<l>I have this day attended the</l>
					<l>inauguration of Gen. Taylor as President.</l>
					<l>The concourse of people was immense but</l>
					<l>all passed off [<unclear>Word]</unclear> &amp; without accident</l>
					<l>About 7 o clock this evening I recd. a note</l>
					<l>from J. M. Clayton calling me immediately</l>
					<l>to the Presidents house, now possessed by Gen.</l>
					<l>Taylor, and I went and on going into the</l>
					<l>Presidents drawing room he directed me to</l>
					<l>go to the office. On my arrival there I found</l>
					<l>J. M. Clayton of Delaware, Sec. of State, Mr. meredith of</l>
					<l>Penn, Sec. of the Treasury, Mr Ewing of Ohio </l>
					<l>Secretary of the Interior, Mr. Preston of Virginia</l>
					<l>Sec. of Navy &amp; Mr. Johnson of Maryland </l>
					<l>Atty. General, that is, those gentlemen had</l>
					<l>been selected by Gen. Taylor for those places</l>

					<l>in his cabinet.</l>
					<l>Mr. Clayton, the Secretary of State</l>
					<l>elect then informed me that Gen. Taylor</l>
					<l>had selected me for a place in the cabinet </l>
					<l>with the Office of Post Master General.</l>
					<l>These appointments will be presented for con-</l>
					<l>firmation to the Senate tomorrow and we</l>
					<l>shall immediately enter our duties. So you</l>
					<l>see I cannot return to you immediately.</l>
					<l>I was some time in consultation with those</l>
					<l>gentlemen before returning to my quarters and </l>
					<l>it is now late in the evening and I can say</l>
					<l>no more. I will soon write you further and </l>
					<l>more definitely, probably tomorrow or next day.</l>
