<l>United States Senate</l>
<l>Washington, D.C.</l>
<l>March 30, 1932.</l>
<l>My Dear Mother</l>
<l>I have take the baptism of an</l>
<l>infant senator and I feel groggy</l>
<l>today. You will see my debate of</l>
<l>the pending democratic tariff measure</l>
<l>in the Record of this day.</l>
<l>The atmosphere of the Senate</l>
<l>differs from that of the Court Room</l>
<l>in the certainty the speaker has</l>
<l>that he is [ ] a partial </l>
<l>and extremely hostile group on one</l>
<l>side of the aisle, tho' he may be</l>
<l>supported by the group on the other</l>
<l>side. Whereas the court room is</l>
<l>usually ruled by a spirit of</l>
<l>impartiality and openmindedness.</l>
<l>Frequent interruption and unexpected</l>
<l>questions excite a serious resistance</l>
<l>beyond my tamer experience. The</l>
<l>result today is depression physically</l>
<l>tho' I am [ ]</l>
<l>and encouraged by the approbation</l>
