My Dear Mother:
I am here for a brief
service on the Airport
Commission of the D.C.
and will return tomorrow.
I was gratified by the
acceptance speech of
Gov. Landon. It rang
true! The simple, sincere
adherence to Americanism
and the fundamental
principles of our plan
of government was
most encouraging after
"three long years" of
infidelity and apostacy [apostasy]--
Mildred and I went to
Ticonderoga yesterday and
I addressed a meeting
of Republicans there
in an out-of-door
rally. We enjoyed it.
Roosevelt is on the
toboggan! He does
not know it any more than
the German who fought
with the colored doughboy.
Have you heard that one?
A negro American soldier and
a German soldier came
to close fighting with
bayonets in the World War.
The German was getting the
better of the negro until
the negro threw away
his gun & bayonet
and pulled out his
razor. Then the German
made a lunge at the negro
but he dodge and made
a quick upward swing
with his razor. The German
sneered and said "you
missed me" Whereupon the negro
replied "Wait 'till you try
to [trim] your head"!!
It is hot here in
Washington.
