<l>WARREN R. AUSTIN</l>
<l>VERMONT</l>
<l>United States Senate</l>
<l>WASHINGTON, D. C.</l>
<l>February 1, 1937</l>
<l>My dear Mother:</l>
<l>Thank you for your fine letter of the 29th.</l>
<l>We are both almost completely recovered from this "Washingtonitis".</l>
<l>My work at present is chiefly in subcommittees taking testimony on</l>
<l>bills referred to the Judiciary Committee. Today, we will contin-</l>
<l>ue taking testimony on the O'Mahoney Bill, which has for its objec-</l>
<l>tive centralization in Washington of control and management of all</l>
<l>business done by corporations, whether the business is production,</l>
<l>manufacturing, mining, or really interstate commerce.</l>
<l>The bill proposes to do this by means of a Federal license, and is</l>
<l>undoubtedly in conflict with the Constitution.</l>
<l>The strangest phenomena about it is the silence of the public.</l>
<l>They must know about the bill because much publicity has been given</l>
<l>it on the radio and in the press. It is the most revolutionary</l>
<l>thing that has yet come up in the New Deal, and the public takes it</l>
<l>in silence. It looks to me as if the people were stunned by the</l>
<l>election, but I assure you that I am still functioning, and that,</l>
<l>when the bill comes out, I shall attack it, even should I be the</l>
<l>only person to fight it.</l>
<l>Best love from both of us.</l>
<l>Your affectionate,</l>
<l>Warren</l>
<l>Mrs. Chauncey G. Austin,</l>
<l>91 South Main Street,</l>
<l>St. Albans, Vermont.</l>
