<l>COPY</l>
<l>April 22, 1937</l>
<l>My dear Mother:</l>
<l>I am delighted with yours of the 20th.</l>
<l>Your courage is my courage, of course. I will carry out your</l>
<l>advice in letter and spirit. There will be no compromise on</l>
<l>the Court proposal. What I may be willing to do with re-</l>
<l>spect to an amendment of the Constitution must be entirely</l>
<l>independent of the defeat of the President's Court bill.</l>
<l>I am very much encouraged by the count as we make it now.</l>
<l>Confidentially, we count fifty votes against the bill, if</l>
<l>it remains in the form that it is now in, but we put a question</l>
<l>mark against the names of eight of these fifty if the bill is</l>
<l>proposed to be amended by reducing the number from six to two.</l>
<l>This will be unfortunate if it occurs, but the threats we</l>
<l>hear lead us to believe that it may not occur because the</l>
<l>President repeatedly insists that his bill is going through</l>
<l>as it is.</l>
<l>Mildred and I are going to the Peninsula of Virginia with</l>
<l>the Military Affairs Committee of the Senate as guests of</l>
<l>the Virginia Peninsula Association, leaving tomorrow night</l>
<l>at six and returning Monday morning.</l>
<l>In the meantime, we have a telegram from Bob saying that he</l>
<l>will arrive tomorrow noon. We are sorry that we have to be</l>
<l>away while he is here.</l>
<l>Best love.</l>
<l>Your affectionate son,</l>
<l>Mrs. Chauncey G. Austin,</l>
<l>St. Albans,</l>
<l>Vermont.</l>
