					<l>Warren R. Austin</l>
					<l>Vermont</l>
					<l>United States Senate</l>
					<l>WASHINGTON, D. C.</l>
					<l>June 10, 1938</l>
					<l>My dear Mother:</l>
<l>Yesterday, I did not write you. Every time I set</l>
					<l>about to do it I was interrupted.</l>
<l>We are sitting on the edges of our seats, with vigi-</l>
					<l>lance.</l>
<l>In spite of the Iowa Primary results, and certain</l>
<l>publicity indicating that the President is slipping,</l>
<l>I regret to observe that the Senate seems to be</l>
<l>absolutely palsied. It sits crouching in fear - ap-</l>
<l>parently. All that has to occur is for</l>
<l>Senator Norris to advocate a bill or an amendment, and</l>
<l>it will pass, without even a deliberate discussion, be-</l>
<l>cause it is believed that the President wants it so.</l>
<l>I am apprehensive of the future.</l>
<l>He has announced the intention to personally tour the</l>
<l>United States to help his friends politically, which</l>
<l>means to destroy men who have heretofore had indepen-</l>
<l>dence enough to vote against him on a few things.</l>
<l>We will probably recess tonight until Monday and</l>
					<l>finish our Session Tuesday.</l>
					<l>Your loving son,</l>
					<l>Wnen</l>
					<l>Mrs. Chauncey G. Austin,</l>
					<l>91 South Main Street,</l>
					<l>St. Albans, Vermont.</l>
