My Dear Mother:
Just came out of Military
Affairs Com. and was surrounded
by a group of probably 20
newsmen eager to know
result of my motion to
open the hearings to
the public.
My motion was lost
by a tie vote, 8 to 8. But
the effect was good
because it pushed
along the cause of
public information to the
point where we agreed that
tho' the hearings would
be in executive session
the record thereof would
be available to the public
except for military secrets,
and any member of the
Committee could tell
what transpired. This
lifts the veil of secrecy
which was my objective.
We are working also
on the Special Finance
Com. on Taxation of
public securities-
