My Dear Mother:
This is an unusual day for
me. I have no committee
meeting.
The Senate is in session
considering the amendments
to the common defense bill.
Sen. Barkley, the majority
floor leader is now speaking.
While I was occupying the
Chair this morning he referred
to my debate of March 1
as authority for one of his
points.
General Sargent's death takes
off the stage one of our
distinguished actors. I[n] add-
ition to his learning and
professional persuasiveness
in jury trials, he had a
grotesque histrionic skill
which he sometimes used to
divert the attention of the
jury from testimony he
wished them not to notice.
I remember his dropping
his [ ] case
silver watch and fob
on the table with a
great clatter at just the
fortuitous moment. The jury
startled saw nothing and heard
nothing at that moment excepting
the accident to [ ]
watch-
