My Dear Mother:
Senate is considering the Bill for
the Reorganization of agencies
of the government. It gives the
President pretty broad powers;
but it does not contain (as last
years bill did) the abolition of
the office of Comptroller General.
This makes the bill less
obnoxious than it formerly was.
However, we will fight to retain
in Congress as much authority
as will check excesses in
reform.
This morning an unusual
thing occurred. In the regular
meeting of Military Affairs Committee.
The chairman Sen. Sheppard was
absent. The ranking Democrat
Sen. Lewis who would take his
place normally telephoned that
he would be late and asked
me (a Republican!!) to
preside. This request was
confirmed by Sen Sheppard
and so-- a Republican
presided- Democrats on the
Com. were very courteous to
me.
Weather getting better and
visitors increasing. I am
mighty glad to see them-
[ ] Vermonters-
Beans for breakfast.
