My Dear Mother:
I hope that you may have
a happy New Year, notwith-
standing your illness. Mildred
has sent you a card today-
There is some dirty snow
here in Washington, and the
temperature is unpleasant,
but I suppose that people
will celebrate just the same
as if they had the
holliday [holiday] setting of Vermont.
The only newsy thing that
has happened since we
arrived is that the
President has caused
invitations to the Jackson
Day Dinner to be issued
to Republican leaders
to be guests of honor.
I know that Senator McNary
and Congressman Martin
have received one. My
own said that his
address would be non-
political. I don't know
whether any of them will be accepted.
Whereas we can feel unembar[r]-
assed in accepting invitations
to the White House, it is quite
something else to accept
invitations to the annual
dinner of the Democratic Party.
