					<l>United States Senate</l>
					<l>Washington, D.C.</l>
					<l>Dec. 29, 1939.</l>
					<l>My Dear Mother:</l>
					<l>I hope that you may have</l>
					<l>a happy New Year, notwith-</l>
					<l>standing your illness.  Mildred</l>
					<l>has sent you a card today-</l>
					<l>There is some dirty snow</l>
					<l>here in Washington, and the</l>
					<l>temperature is unpleasant,</l>
					<l>but I suppose that people</l>
					<l>will celebrate just the same</l>
					<l>as if they had the</l>
					<l>holliday [holiday] setting of Vermont.</l>
				</lg>
			</p>

			<p>
				<lg>
					<l>The only newsy thing that</l>
					<l>has happened since we</l>
					<l>arrived is that the</l>
					<l>President has caused</l>
					<l>invitations to the Jackson</l>
					<l>Day Dinner to be issued</l>
					<l>to Republican leaders</l>
					<l>to be guests of honor.</l>
					<l>I know that Senator McNary</l>
					<l>and Congressman Martin</l>
					<l>have received one.  My </l>
					<l>own said that his</l>
					<l>address would be non-</l>
					<l>political.  I don&apos;t know</l>
				</lg>
			</p>
			<pb n='3'/>
			<p>
				<lg>
					<l>whether any of them will be accepted.</l>
					<l>Whereas we can feel unembar[r]-</l>
					<l>assed in accepting invitations</l>
					<l>to the White House, it is quite</l>
					<l>something else to accept</l>
					<l>invitations to the annual</l>
					<l>dinner of the Democratic Party.</l>
					<l>All this is confidential-</l>
					<l>God bless you-</l>
					<l>Love from us both- Warren</l>
