<l>Warren R. Austin</l>
<l>Vermont</l>
<l>United States Senate</l>
<l>Washington, D.C.</l>
<l>Sunday, Jan. 7, 1940.</l>
<l>My Dear Mother:</l>
<l>I walked to the office this morning. It</l>
<l>is solid winter weather here.</l>
<l>We expect to hold a session of the</l>
<l>Senate tomorrow and call the Calendar</l>
<l>for unobjected bills. I presume that</l>
<l>Committees will also sit. I am on</l>
<l>the sub-committee to consider the</l>
<l>nomination of Gen'l Murphy for</l>
<l>justice of the Supreme Court. I became</l>
<l>convinced when we examined</l>
<l>him for confirmation as Atty. Gen'l</l>
<l>that, tho' he is a New Dealer, he</l>
<l>was not disqualified by anything</l>
<l>in his attitude to the Constitution.</l>
<l>If his conduct as Governor of Mich.</l>
<l>in the sitdown strikes did not</l>
<l>meet my approval, yet, it was</l>
<l>his best judgment that governed</l>
<l>his acts viz : negotation rather than force.</l>
<l>Hope you continue to improve, Best love,</l>
<l>Warren</l>
