Warren R. Austin Vermont United States Senate Washington, D.C. Sunday, Jan. 7, 1940. My Dear Mother: I walked to the office this morning.  It is solid winter weather here. We expect to hold a session of the Senate tomorrow and call the Calendar for unobjected bills.  I presume that Committees will also sit.  I am on the sub-committee to consider the nomination of Gen'l Murphy for justice of the Supreme Court.  I became convinced when we examined him for confirmation as Atty. Gen'l that, tho' he is a New Dealer, he was not disqualified by anything in his attitude to the Constitution. If his conduct as Governor of Mich. in the sitdown strikes did not meet my approval, yet, it was his best judgment that governed his acts viz : negotation rather than force.
