United States Senate Washington April 3, 1940. My Dear Mother: The Wisconsin primary indicates a Republican trend.  How important it may be is difficult to know.  Wisc. is a strong state. It has been radical so long that customary standards for party evaluation are of little use. Deweys tremendous success indicates that much intensive work was done on one side and nothing at all on the other.  Such competion [competition?] continued would bury Vandenberg and pull the hole in after him. I have not taken sides because of my responsibilities as assistant floor leader of the minority. I must keep my efficiency, if possible, in dealing with all of the candidates who are in the Senate. It is raining. Best love, Warren
