					<l>United States Senate</l>
					<l>Washington</l>
					<l>April 3, 1940.</l>
					<l>My Dear Mother:</l>
					<l>The Wisconsin primary indicates</l>
					<l>a Republican trend.  How</l>
<l>important it may be is difficult</l>
					<l>to know.  Wisc. is a strong state.</l>
<l>It has been radical so long that</l>
					<l>customary standards for party</l>
					<l>evaluation are of little use.</l>
					<l>Deweys tremendous success</l>
					<l>indicates that much intensive</l>
<l>work was done on one side</l>
<l>and nothing at all on the</l>
					<l>other.  Such competion [competition?] continued</l>
					<l>would bury Vandenberg and</l>
<l>pull the hole in after him.</l>

<l>I have not taken sides because</l>
					<l>of my responsibilities as assistant</l>
					<l>floor leader of the minority.</l>
					<l>I must keep my efficiency,</l>
					<l>if possible, in dealing with</l>
					<l>all of the candidates who</l>
					<l>are in the Senate.</l>
					<l>It is raining.</l>
					<l>Best love,</l>
