United States Senate Washington, D.C. April 16, 1940. My Dear Mother: It is warmer this morning. Perhaps Spring is just around the corner- Today the Senate will finish the pending business about two o'clock and go to the opening ball game of the season.  I shall take advantage of the time to try to catch up with my mail. I sent Chan some papers this morning which interested him. Much interest is being expressed to me by mail and personal interviews to have me go to the National Rep. Convention Many want to make me chairman. I am willing to serve in the most useful way I can, but I do not seek position or personal aggrandisement [aggrandizement] of any kind.  So there will be no contest between Gov. Aiken and me about this matter- This is for your special information.  I have made no public statement about it. Best love, Warren
