My Dear Mother:
Bob is here and it is good
to see him. Also I had
a lovely letter from Chan
this morning. Many
visitors from Vermont
have called. So I am
happy.
We are moving fast
in the direction of National
defense. This is as it
should be. The War puts
us on guard.
This noon Sen. McNary
had a luncheon to which
he invited leaders of the
Republicans in the Senate
and the candidates for
President to meet Gov.
Stassen of Minnessota who
will be the "Kenoter" of
our National Convention.
He wanted to talk over
high points in his speech.
We were quite frank,
therefore, there was some
disagreement. It was
friendly however.
My own views of our foreign policy
are not generally shared by those
present. I believe I represent the
Vermont idea of independence
thro' not isolation. Most of those
present were isolationists-
Perhaps Taft, White and I agree.
The others were McNary, Vanderberg
Townshend and Lodge.
