My Dear Mother:
The Dutch are retreating
exhausted- Germany is
practically in control of
the Netherlands- On the
other hand, there are three
French armies in Belgium.
These plus British and Belgians
are preparing for a great
battle. This is news by
telephone which I just
had at a luncheon in
which the British were
represented by Lord Lothian
and the French by the Cancellor [Chancellor]
of the French Embassy.
Probably the newspapers will
get it to you tomorrow.
We are debating Plan IX
of reorganization by
which the Presidents
personal, power would be
aggrandized.
Yesterday we spent at
Senator Birds home in
Virginia- The fruit trees
are gorgeous. In full
