United States Senate Washington May 16, 1940. My Dear Mother: I flew out to Aberdeen, Md. this A.M. to witness an experiment with a new type of bomb. Nothing happened.  Our efficient army so boggled the affair that the explosive all escaped into thin air before we arrived at the place of trial- How absurd! It rained then and we drove back in autos to Washington, 75 miles, and attended the Joint Session.  The Presidents message expressed the right principles but it sounded much like a political speech favoring a third term. Best love, Warren
