United States Senate Washington, D.C. June 17, 1940. My Dear Mother: Your birthday.  I hope you are well and happy. I had lunch at a Democratic party this noon (only 2 Republican Sen. McNary and myself present). It was in honor of Count de Chambrun great grandson of Lafayette. He escaped from France, came to America on a trans-Atlantic Clipper. His story of the war in which he served in the Maginot Line as a Captain is a sad but interesting story. No doubt the Fifth [ ] was at work in France as well as elsewhere. France has surrendered but he thinks England can lick Hilter yet- Best love, Warren
