					<l>United States Senate</l>
					<l>WASHINGTON, D. C.</l>
					<l>June 21, 1940</l>
					<l>My dear Mother:</l>
<l>Probably I will not get a chance to write you in long hand</l>
					<l>today.</l>
<l>I intend to attend Military Affairs Committee this morning,</l>
<l>which has a most provoking problem for me, namely: whether</l>
<l>I shall endorse the appointment of Mr. Stimson as Secretary</l>
<l>of War. This is puzzling because of my intention to second</l>
<l>the nomination of Mr. Taft for President, and the peculiar</l>
<l>political angle this appointment has taken. Between now and</l>
					<l>10:30 I must unbend the angle, if I can.</l>
<l>At 3 I return to the hotel to finish packing, and at four</l>
<l>start for Brattleboro for the Gibson funeral.</l>
<l>I shall return to Philadelphia on Sunday, where you can reach</l>
<l>me by mail at Rooms 1529-1530 Bellevue Stratford Hotel.</l>
<l>After the Convention we will go to Vermont, and I shall stay</l>
<l>there even though I have to play hooky. I have a sense of</l>
<l>warning that we must look out for our health a little bit if</l>
					<l>we can do so.</l>
<l>There is nothing the matter with me, but I know that a little</l>
					<l>rest is important.</l>
					<l>Best love.</l>
					<l>Warren,</l>
					<l>Mrs. C.G.Austin,</l>
					<l>St. Albans,</l>
					<l>Vermont.</l>
