United States Senate Washington Aug. 5, 1940. My Dear Mother: I was here on time for my meeting of Military Affairs Commitee.  However, this is the circuitous route I had to take: 1. Burlington to Rockingham Vt. There I made a speech at 4-5 in the afternoon; 2. Rockingham to Concord, N.H. 3. At 7.20 P.M. I took plane Concord to Boston: 4. At Boston took a different plane to New York; 5. At New York took different plane to Washington- So my day was a long one- This morning the Committee voted favorably 13 to 3 to report the conscription bill. Now we are debating the National Guard bill. It was great to see you with the grandchildren. Best love, Warren
