Senate Chamber
Aug. 20, 1940.
My Dear Mother:
The debate rattles on, like
an empty old lumber wagon.
Not much accomplished
except circulation of hot
air.
I have a great speech
bottled up in me but I
believe that I may not
uncork it. If I could
follow my own choice I
would not take the time
or challenge the patience
of the Senate. Some of my
colleague[s] ask me to state
my views- They say that I
ought to do so being
ranking Republican on the
Military Affairs Committee.
This morning and tomorrow
we hold meetings of that
Com. on other features
of National defense.
It is cooler here today-
