My Dear Mother:
Long day yesterday: Started in
my office at 7.30 A.M. Commmitee
at 10, Senate at 11, and held right
up to 10 P.M.
Today we repeat.
Right now Sen. Johnson of Colorado
is on the floor with what looks
like the manuscript of a two hour
speech, which will not add a new
thought or clarify an old one.
We made progress yesterday
by disposing many proposals
to amend. I think that we
improved the bill.
It seems to me [ ] that
(that word is intriguing) both Pres.
Roosevelt and Mr. Wilkie sent
word to me- the one thro' Sen.
Gibson, the other thro' Sen. [ ]
commending my service for
National Defense.
I hope your garden was
not frozen stiff during the
cold wave. Also I hope that
you are feeling stronger.
