<l>Senate Chamber</l>
<l>Oct. 1, 1940.</l>
<l>My Dear Mother:</l>
<l>I hear that the House may act today</l>
<l>on the tax bill. If it comes over</l>
<l>to the Senate today our session</l>
<l>will be shortened some. I will</l>
<l>feel that we can recess next </l>
<l>Friday.</l>
<l>Wilkie made a speech last night</l>
<l>that may be more effective than</l>
<l>some of the more cultured</l>
<l>utterances of our statesmen.</l>
<l>Sen. Vanderberg says that some</l>
<l>gallery god threw a carrot at</l>
<l>him from behind and it missed</l>

<l>That is a good omen.</l>
<l>Francis Wilson in his play "Half</l>
<l>a King" took advantage of such</l>
<l>a demonstration by picking</l>
<l>up the carrot, biting a chunk</l>
<l>out of it and commenting</l>
<l>"Humiliating but wholesome."</l>
<l>a drunken woman (Democrat)</l>
<l>threw a chair out of the Cadillac</l>
<l>Hotel into a Wilkie crowd</l>
<l>and hit a child. The child</l>
<l>is in a Hospital, the woman</l>
<l>in jail. This bad for both,</l>
<l>but the omen is also good.</l>
<l>Best love,</l>
<l>Warren</l>
