Photograph dated Feb. 23, 1940. Original caption reads: WPA Project No. 655-12-2-62. This view shows the construction of the North End Sewer in front of the George Farrington [1106 North Ave.] and the Ralph Thayer [1076 North Ave.] residence opposite the entrance to the Burlington Rendering Company's plant. This section of the project is a 15" sewer being constructed entirely with hand labor, using sledge hammers and wedges for excavating through the frost. The Universal Crane used for pulling sheeting and handling materials on the job can be seen in the distance where the excavator is being used for installing the 18" pipe. The depth of the sewer at this location is approximately 12-13 feet.
